I thought it would be fun to share a couple of funny, weird, peculiar things that I did as a child. The crazy thing about this is that they both have to do with urinating!! I recently realized this, and both situations have nothing to do with each other; after reading this, please comment on this post with your crazy childhood story.
Peeing and Skiing
I grew up in Reno, Nevada where we were always blessed with winters full of snow. I learned to ski at Mt. Rose Ski Resort (25 minutes from Reno) when I was five years old. Every weekend my dad would take my brothers and me up the mountain for lessons. I usually took lessons with a group of kids the same age as me. Often times after our ski lesson, our group would then go and “free” ski together. In those days (early 80’s) skiing alone at age 6 wasn’t a big deal. Not to mention we had no way to communicate with each other or our parents. You just knew to be at the parking lot when the lifts closed.
If anyone knows me, they know that I have really bad FOMO (fear of missing out)! With regards to skiing, I didn’t want to miss out on any great skiing moments with my friends. So the thought of having to break away and miss out just wasn’t my thing. Especially when it came to going to the bathroom. What a pain it was to ski down to the lodge, put the skis away, walk to the restroom and then take off what seemed like hundreds of layers of clothes. The thought of doing it alone always seemed so scary. I would hold it in all day until I couldn’t hold it any longer and just sit down in my ski pants and pee. This wasn’t a light dribbling pee, it was full-on soaking of the pants! Not only is that crazy, but I would then get back up and ski the rest of the day.
I remember being so uncomfortable but actually skiing until my pants dried!! I must have smelled so bad. Good thing my mom bought me yellow ski pants to wear the following year!
Yes, you read the headline right, closet peeing! When I was around 7-8 years old, I was terrified of the dark. I remember having these repeated dreams of a boogie man that would come into the room in my house. I would try to wake up from these dreams and feel almost drugged, and I couldn’t get up. These dreams scared me so much that I was fearful of walking from my room to the bathroom, and often I would end up sleeping in between my parents in their bed.
Since walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night was clearly not an option, what a better place to urinate than in my bedroom. Better yet, in the closet. I guess I figured no one would find out my secret. I don’t remember my parents getting mad at me or even saying anything about these episodes. However, I remember a hard, crunchy spot on the shag rug that smelled like pee in my closet. How gross is that?? I wonder why I didn’t just turn on the light? I think I had a case of Teraphobia, fear of monsters!
