What is a new year’s resolution anyway?? According to Google, a New Years’ resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere, but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere. A New Years’ resolution is when a person resolves to continue good practices, change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal, or otherwise improve their life.

Every year we all seem to jump to the same New Years’ resolutions, start a new diet, a new workout routine, save money. Although those are always good ideas, they sometimes are shortlived.

In recent years, when coming up with my resolutions, or goals, I categorize my ideas, here is my list;

  • Health/Beauty
  • Charity/Volunteer
  • Organizing/Projects
  • Cooking

Health/Beauty

Health and Beauty are my biggest category because it has everything to do with taking care of myself. From exercise, diet, to meditation, we all need to live every day being conscious of our mind, body, and spirit.

Diet

Every year we get older, and our body changes, we must always be listening to what it (our body) is telling us. For me, I will continue with an 80/20 diet, which is 80% clean and 20% whatever. Food is a massive part of my life. Outside the survival element, food is such a sensual experience. I think intense flavors and textures can stimulating. Food is also a very social and bonding experience. There is nothing better than sharing food with family and friends, one of the best times in life!

Exercise

Yoga-Eagle Pose

As far as exercising, My new goal for 2020 is to do more yoga. I have been doing yoga for over 30 years, and now more than ever, I feel achy and sore after I do any cardio exercise. Adding more flexibility is so beneficial for your body, and of course, the deep breathing that yoga requires is essential, lowering stress. My new work out routine is;

  • Yoga- Monday, Wednesday, Friday
  • Zumba-Tuesday, Thursday
  • Hiking-Saturday, Sunday

Beauty

To feel good is to look good. I just recently cut 4 inches off my nose. I was feeling fugly (fucking ugly), just drabby. I go through these stages every once in a while. I felt like I looked like everyone else. I needed an update, a more fashion-forward look. I love it!! It’s fun to take a risk, go out of your box, but please, if you are going for a drastic cut, research hairstyles, save pictures to show your hairdresser. Guess what? If you hate it, it will grow back.

Charity/Volunteer

Nothing feels better than donating your time or helping others in need. If you are sitting there on your computer reading this, there are definitely others that are far worse off. I am talking about someone who is ill, hungry, just plain helpless. It just takes one time to volunteer and sees a difference that you can make in someone’s life for you to want to volunteer again and again.

Delivering food to those in need

Food mobile

Last year I volunteered to deliver meals for Jewish Family Services. This year I will continue to volunteer and provide meals for those in need. If you are interested in volunteering click herehttps://jfssd.org/our-services/food-meals/home-delivered-meals-foodmobile/. You don’t need to be Jewish to volunteer, and the food that is delivered is to every race and religion.

Holocaust education

Another goal of mine for this new year is to become more involved in Holocaust studies. If you watch the news, anti-semitism is rampant. We must keep teaching and reminding our children of the Holocaust so that this will not happen again. This has always been very dear to my heart since my mother is a survivor and she is still alive.

Organizing/Projects

You know those things on your list that you say you will get to over and over, but you never do, and you keep agonizing over them?? They aren’t necessities, but you know it will feel good to do them, that is what I am feeling right now. Here is a list of my projects that I have been dwelling upon;

taking CD’S & DVD’S in to get digitized
  • write two stories a week for my blog
  • read two books a month
  • a photo book from Italy/Spain trip last summer
  • finishing a vest that I was making and sewing
  • painting a jacket that I saw online
  • clean out closet/desk/car
  • taking all my CDs, DVDs and transferring to USB
  • organize photos in my garage

Cooking

I love to cook

Cooking is one of the biggest joys of my life. I love to watch people eat my food and smile. My mother wasn’t able to cook much when I was younger because she and my father were working so hard to support my brothers and I. I learned how to cook from cookbooks and online recipes. I love to try new recipes and test them out on my family and friends. I always shop at my local grocery stores and would like to branch out and try new places

This year I want to go where chefs go to source their ingredients. I always hear about these fabulous markets but never go out and try them. Here are some of the places I want to shop at for my recipes

  • Specialty produce
  • 99 Ranch Market
  • Balboa International Market
  • Little Italy Farmers Market

With all my resolutions, hopes, and dreams, the biggest wish I have is health and gratitude. There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not grateful for the family and friends that I have and the beautiful life that I live. I only wish the same for the world around me. To anyone who is reading this post, I hope you an excellent 2020. Please don’t waste a day because it may be your last. Remember, we are all here for a brief visit.
